OBJECTIVE: Non-dissolvable nasal packs (Rapid Rhino and Merocel) are widely used in secondary healthcare centres for the control of epistaxis, with some side effects. METHODS: A prospective, observational cohort study was conducted of adults who required Rapid Rhino or Merocel packing for acute epistaxis management in a large healthcare centre between March 2020 and 2021. A validated modified version of the 22-item Sino-Nasal Outcome Test was used. RESULTS: A total of 80 adults requiring non-dissolvable packs were recruited. Seventy per cent of patients had Rapid Rhino packs inserted. Embarrassment was greater in patients who used Rapid Rhino than Merocel. Merocel packs had a significantly higher mean pain score on removal compared to Rapid Rhino. There was no correlation between rebleed rate and type of nasal pack used. CONCLUSION: Non-dissolvable Rapid Rhino and Merocel nasal packs have similar efficacy in controlling epistaxis. Rapid Rhino packs are more embarrassing for patients in comparison to Merocel packs, but are less painful to remove.

INTRODUCTION: Peer teaching is a valuable approach whereby students engage in reciprocal teaching and learning. However, there is limited literature on preparing students for this role, known as Peer Teacher Training (PTT), and exploring its long-term impact. This study investigates the impact of a previously implemented PTT programme on participants' application to clinical practice and their preparation for a future educator role. METHODS: A convergent mixed methods approach was used involving questionnaires and semi-structured interviews after a mean time interval of seventeen months post-course. All participants who had previously undertaken the programme (n = 20), were invited to join. RESULTS: Fifteen respondents completed the questionnaire, with twelve participating in one-to-one interviews. Participants demonstrated sustained improvements in perceived understanding and application of educational principles with greater confidence to teach upon entering the workforce. Interviews highlighted enhanced preparation for future educator roles, reflective teaching practices, influence over career choices and a wider benefit of the PTT to patients, peers, and students. DISCUSSION: This study demonstrates the long-term benefits of a PTT through sustained improvements in participants' confidence and perceived competence in teaching skills. Future work should focus on integrating PTT into the medical curricula and expansion to include other healthcare professional students.

Pavement burns are more common in locations familiarised with high temperatures and a dry climate zone, but have not previously been reported in temperate climates. We present two cases of patients who suffered pavement burns in the United Kingdom during an unprecedentedly hot day in July 2022. The first case involved a 66-year-old male who suffered partial and full thickness burns requiring excision and skin grafting. The second case involved a 58-year-old female with partial thickness burns also requiring excision and skin grafting. Both patients had pre-existing co-morbidities and their pavement burns were precipitated by heat stroke. Pavement burns represent a mechanism of injury that necessitates increased operative management, length of hospital stay and cost per surface area burned when compared to flame or scald burns (Silver et al., 2015). As a result of global warming, we anticipate extreme heat events, and subsequently pavement burns, to increase in incidence in the United Kingdom. There is opportunity for education of the public and health professionals for prevention.

BACKGROUND: To review published literature on the use of quick response (QR) codes within healthcare education. In addition, the authors aimed to gain information on user perceptions and the challenges faced when implementing QR codes in an educational context. METHODS: Medline, EMBASE, CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature), HMIC (Healthcare Management Information Consortium) and HBE (Health Business Elite) were searched using specified search terms that included 'quick response code' and 'education'. Title and abstract review of 217 publications was performed. Papers which discussed the application of QR codes relevant to healthcare education were included. A total of 24 articles were reviewed and thematic analysis conducted to generate themes. RESULTS: Use of QR codes in healthcare education were broadly aligned to four common themes. These included: to increase participant engagement, for simulation training, for just-in-time (JIT) learning and to facilitate with administrative tasks in training. Perceptions towards the use of QR codes was generally positive. Challenges identified, included: problems with technical infrastructure, unavailability of smartphones and resistance to use in certain environments. CONCLUSIONS: The use of QR codes for healthcare education is increasing, and whilst they offer some advantages there are also some important considerations including: provision of the necessary technological infrastructure, patient and staff safety and governance and adherence to guidelines on safe and appropriate use of this technology in sensitive settings.
